Creating unique gifts for your loved ones doesn't have to require a huge financial investment or a lot of time. You can create customized gifts for your loved ones using simple supplies you can get at any hardware store. Below is a guide for creating customized coasters for your loved ones.

Supplies You'll Need

  • Numerous 4" x 4" Tiles
  • Pictures of Your Loved Ones
  • Peel and Stick Felt Pads
  • Scissors
  • Craft Glue Sticks
  • A Pencil
  • A Permanent Marker
  •  Polyurethane Spray
  • 180-Grit Sand Paper

Rough up the Tiles

Tiles have a smooth finish on the top that can make it difficult to adhere the pictures. Use the sand paper to lightly roughen the surface of the tiles so that the pictures will stick easily to them.

Size the Pictures

Lay a tile on top of each picture that you want to use to create coasters. Use the pencil to trace the coaster to ensure that you know how small to cut the pictures. Cut the pictures a few millimeters smaller than the lines that you created so that you can be certain the pictures will not go over the edges of the tile.

Customize the Pictures

Use the marker to write something on each picture to make them even more customized. You can simply add the initial of the family's last name to the corner of each picture or write sayings such as "Love Growing Strong" or "We Are Blessed" along the bottoms of the pictures.

Add the Felt Pads

Lay the tiles with the bottom sides facing upward on a table. Peel the felt pads off the sheets they come on and place them in the corners of each tile. Every tile should have four felt pads when you are done. The pads ensure that the tiles do not cause damage to furniture when they sit on it.

Attach the Pictures

Add glue to the back of a picture and carefully place it in the center of the top of the tile. Allow the glue to dry for a few minutes before continuing.

Seal the Coasters

Spray the polyurethane spray on all of the coasters to create a protective film around the pictures. This will allow the recipients to place drinks on the coasters without ruining the pictures.

The coasters are easy to customize and make great gifts. You can choose colored tiles, use black and white pictures or colored pictures, and even use drawings that kids create to make unique coasters anyone would be happy to receive.
